Melanie’s innovation is a device for the non-invasive diagnosis of bladder cancers. Bladder
cancer is an overlooked health concern. It is the 7th most common cancer in developed
countries (4th in men) and has one of the highest recurrence rates of all cancers. The device
consists of an advanced functional coating integrated in a microfluidic chamber. As the urine
sample is driven through the microchannel, cancer cells selectively bound to the
nanoengineered surface while other metabolites are washed trough. Pre-clinical tests
demonstrated that the biosensor successfully captures cancer cells from the urine of
patients from the Repatriation Hospital urology ward.
